History
- History: Minerva was born to a couple with a tragic and amazing love story. Isobel Ross, an accomplished witch from a scottish village, fell in love with a muggle man named Robert McGonagall. She kept her identity as a witch hidden, not wanting to frighten the man she loved. The two eloped when Isobel was 18, spurning both sets of parents, and started a life together with Robert working as a revered at a presbyterian church.
They welcomed their first child, a girl, on the 4th of October, 1935. Isobel named her after her grandmother, a powerful and accomplished witch, Minerva. From her first moments in the world Minerva displayed her affinity for magic, something with amazed and terrified her mother. She would make toys from the top shelf appear in her crib, or cause her father's bagpipes to play and giggle at the noise. She would even make the family cat do her bidding with no words.
So as not to frighten her husband Isobel hid all of it from him, but it caused a rift between them as she began to draw away from him to protect her daughter. But she could not do so forever as her love for him was too strong to stay away. She confessed her secret and explained why she had to keep it. Despite his feeling of distrust the two remained together and had two more children, two boys named Malcolm and Robert Jr. Both boys also displayed magical abilities.
Minerva loved her father growing up. He was a serious man, but she knew underneath it outward layer he had a soft and loving heart. Being his first and only daughter she had him all but wrapped around her finger, and aspired to be much like him. It was because of this attachment that Robert could not help but accept and love his daughter and come to an understanding about his wife’s secret. She could tell from a young age that something was not entirely right between her parents, that they had drifted apart more and more emotionally. It was because of this that she promised she would never keep such a big secret about herself from someone she loved.
At eleven Minerva got her acceptance letter from Hogwarts, which was a joyous and sad time for the house. Her mother wept with joy and with envy and they made the trip to Diagon Alley.
When she arrived at the school, with all the other first years, to be sorted, she caused a hatstall of five and half minutes as it decided between Gryffindor and Ravenclaw. She could do well in either house being brave and a capable leader, but also wise and highly intelligent. It finally settled on the former and the Gryffindor house cheered to accept a new witch into their midst.
She excelled at school and found Hogwarts to be a home away from home, perhaps even more of a home then her parents home. She excelled at Transfiguration, under the guidance of the teacher. She also met and became strong friends with Pamona Sprout.
During her time at Hogwarts she became a prefect, and a head girl. She got top scores on both her O.W.L. and N.E.W.T. exams, and was awarded Transfiguration Today Most Promising Newcomer award. Under the tutelage of the transfiguration Professor she became an Animagus registered with the Ministry of Magic. She played for the Gryffindor Quidditch team until a foul, on the part of the Slytherin team, caused her to fall to the ground and suffer a concussion and several broken ribs. This is also what sparked her ever growing desire to see Slytherin crushed on the playing field.
After graduation she was offered a position at the Department of Magical Law Enforcement for the British Ministry of Magic. She returned to home to her families manse for the summer before she would move to London for her new job. It was during this time, when she was now eighteen, that she met a rather handsome and clever muggle man by the name of Dougal McGregor. They spent much time together and she fell completely in love with him. He proposed to her in the ploughed field and she accepted, making a spontaneous move for the first time in her life. However, that night she thought of what the marriage would mean and how she was bound to secrecy of who she was. Marrying the son of a farmer, a muggle man, would mean she would be following in her mother’s footsteps and she would have to lock her wand away and hide who she was. Unable to break the code she was bound to she was forced to break Dougal’s heart with no decent explanation. She returned to London three days later, uncertain if she had made the right choice.
She worked with the ministry for two years, but found herself bored and dissatisfied with her job. She had considered returning home when she was offered a position at Hogwarts, teaching transfiguration. Returning to the school she knew she had made the right choice, as she was at home in the old castle, now utilizing her talents to teach new and bright witches and wizards.
She became known as a strict disciplinarian and would maintain control of her student with a stern hand, which gave her a reputation as someone not to be crossed. She quickly became head of her department and was also assigned the duty of head of Gryffindor house, one she takes very seriously. Because of her strong and close bond with the Headmaster they entrusted her with the title of deputy headmistress and the two would often meet to discuss the school, or to just speak of events. Something that became more and more as the rumours of the Grindelwald began to surface outside of the safety of the school.
Her home and her place is the school, and while she still loves Dougal, nothing could take her away from the castle.
